The PRO BONO PROTECTIVE ORDER
PROJECT program involves 2 court appearances: the preliminary
and permanent hearing dates (2 weeks apart). Protective order petitions
are heard Monday through Friday beginning at 11:30 a.m. A member of
our Victim/Witness staff contacts the attorney on the scheduled day
by 10:30 to notify him/her of any petitioners. We ask the attorneys
to schedule arrival at the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court between
11:00 and 11:15. We can also FAX information to him/her if this is
more convenient. There may be occasions when services are not needed;
in this situation we will notify him/her by 10:30 on the scheduled
day. Attorneys are advised to notify the deputy in the courtroom area
that he/she is the scheduled Pro Bono Attorney for protective orders
that day. This may prevent undue waiting because most judges will
hear the protective order petitions before the pre-trials if they
know an attorney is present. If the preliminary order is granted the
petitioner will be expected to return 2 weeks later for the permanent
hearing. If both parties are present, or if the petition is dismissed,
there may not be a return date. If you have any further questions
or would like to schedule dates, please do not hesitate to call the
Victim/Witness Assistance Program at (804)717-6179. Your assistance
is greatly appreciated and we hope that your pro bono experience is
a rewarding one.
