CHESTERFIELD BAR ASSOCIATION HISTORY
The Chesterfield Bar Association was formed on January 6, 1954 and
was known as the Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Bar Association. The
founding members were Edward M. Hudgins, Jr., President; Marcus A.
(Mac) Cogbill, Vice-President and Ernest P. Gates, Sr., Secretary-Treasurer.
Other charter members were Ann Wintzer, D. W. (Pat) Murphey, R. Pinckney
Sowers, William Old, Harry Snead Sr., J. Bagby Womble, J.J. (Jerry)
Jewett and James W. Gordon, Jr. The association was formed to improve
the court sytem and to separate Chesterfield County and the City of
Colonial Heights from the Circuit which at that time included Amelia,
Dinwiddie, Petersburg, Powhatan and Nottoway. The association was
successful in obtaining a separate circuit and assisted in obtaining
new court facilities for Chesterfield three times and once for the
City of Colonial Heights. Today the Association has in excess of 283
members.*
